Barbados Beaches

This pleasant little isle makes that golden elixir that's revered by seafarers, so it's the ideal place to tip a bit'o'rum. But if you came looking for golden treasure of the sandy sort you also landed in the right spot.

And while the claim of beautiful Barbados beaches is accurate, what the locals neglect to tell you is that almost every resort here has a great beach right outside its door. So regardless of where you stay, chances are you won’t have far to go to cure that hangover you got the night before celebrating the discovery of rum.

"Get the waiter - I think I need another Bloody Mary."

And don’t forget your swimsuit because clothing optional bathing is not allowed on Barbados beaches, not even the top-op variety. I can hear some lady saying:

"That’s definitely the place I’m going to take my Harold."

Bottom Bay is a local favorite. You park at the top of a cliff, then walk down steps to a romantic tropical beach with swaying coconut palms and even a cave. Watch yourself in the surf as this is the Atlantic side of the island and the water can get rough. Also be sure to bring food and drink because there‘s none available.

Gibbes, Heywoods and Mullins beaches on the west Gold Coast are the places to go for a nice relaxing rump-roast. Paynes Bay falls into this lazy-lizard category as well. Mullins is the most active of the group though not anything like the beaches on the south coast. If you want to be where the action is, head south to Accra Beach, also known as Rockley.

If you’re looking for something a bit more upscale, sashay over to the Colony Club or Sandy Lane and rub elbows with the rich and famous. They can’t toss you out. All Barbados beaches are public.

Let's keep it safe out there! Because ocean conditions change daily, follow these rules: (1) Always check with 'locals' about hazards before entering the water, (2) Obey all 'warning flags', (3) Swim inside 'safety areas' provided, (4) Never swim alone, and (5) Never swim far out. Finally, when in doubt, don't go in.
