Longing for a nice tropical getaway because the weatherman says one hell of a winter storm is headed your way? But there's not much left in the ol' bank account? The answer is a bargain-basement nirvana called the Dominican Republic just a few hours away by jet.
The DR is the working stiff’s answer to an affordable slice of paradise. Even on a tight budget anyone can slip away for a week or two on a Dominican beach. Just think how you'll smile when you get off that plane. "Ahhh...sunshine."
And there are so many Dominican beaches to choose from. Start on the north coast where well established tourist meccas attract the young and venturous. Cabarete is a windsurfer hangout, while just up the coast at Sosúa the party that starts on the beach in the afternoon doesn’t end till the wee hours of the morning. Or, if you're feeling more demure, perhaps Playa Dorado with a similar flair but less activity will fill the bill. For those who are city kids at heart, head south to Boca Chica just outside of the capital where the action sizzles 24/7.
If you prefer a more peaceful setting, head for the Samaná peninsula and a little eco-friendly relaxation. Start at Las Terrenas or Playa Bonita where the only sounds other than waves will be corks popping out of wine bottles in the small waterfront cafes. - "Mon dieu, so European!" - Or to really unwind, try Galeras, a lovely beach at the end of the peninsula. If that isn't slow enough for you, catch a boat over to Cayo Leventado for a tranquil afternoon of doing nothing but catching rays and staring at the horizon.
For an upscale getaway, book into one of the all inclusive resorts of Bávaro at Punta Cana. Here you'll find nothing but white sand, blue seas and lazy palms hanging over what are probably the very best of the Dominican beaches.
