Maldives Beaches

Looking for a winter destination that’s warm and tropical without any daily hassles? And one that has the most picturesque beaches on earth? Then you better book that ticket straight through to a Maldives beach, where sun, sea and sky merge into a tranquil infinescence. As far as earthly paradises go, this is as good as it gets.

Of course everything has its price, so if you’re not a high roller you may have to take out a second mortgage or sell your stamp collection to afford this epic journey. But what the hey, we only come this way once. Time for that supreme Maldives beach holiday you’ve always dreamed about.

For resorts that won’t completely wipe out the kids’ college fund, try Kuredu, Paradise or Sun Islands. For a more relaxed but still moderately priced holiday, head for Eriyadu Island or Laguna Beach Resort. For mid-market resorts book your stay at the Holiday or Royal Islands.

But if you'd like to take your once in a lifetime Maldives beach escape to the next level, then you should head for the Banyan Tree or Huvafen Fushi. The Banyan will take you and your special partner by boat to a deserted sandbank just as the sun is about to set over the Indian Ocean. Here they will set up and cook for you a torch lit dinner worthy of a five star restaurant, with only the whisper of waves lapping against the sandy shore to harmonize with your conversation. What a way to reintroduce a little zing into that long standing relationship - or fire up a new one.

At Huvafen Fushi, get a massage at the underwater spa, where you can watch the fish swim by as they knead your stress away. Or sit at the underwater bar and imbibe a bit of brandy - with a few toasts to King Neptune of course. Or for a good old-fashioned slosh, slip over to Holiday Island, where the drinks are served at the main bar until the last person leaves. Now that’s what I call sporting.

Kuredu Island Resort has a six hole pitch and putt course for beach-buzzards who get edgy being away from a golf course too long. "Mildred, guess what, I shot a 64 today."

Sun Island Resort is a large resort by Maldives standards with several hundred rooms. And one of the few Maldives beaches that are primarily man-made. There's a switch. Man giving Mother Nature a hand.
