This island nation is an eco-tourist's delight. Only several miles off the coast of the South America, this jungle haven's rustic charm is exceeded only by the friendliness of its citizens. A good place to trek through a virgin rain forest, then loosen your bootlaces for a quick dip at a deserted beach. Some contend that this is where Defoe got his idea for Robinson Crusoe. Rob should have had it so good.
You can play pampered Crusoe at any of the many Tobago beaches. Start at Pigeon Point and Store Bay. Here, you'll find all the things any marooned seafarer could possibly hope for. How about a little rum punch with that crisp grilled fish? And don’t forget to thank the sea-gods for depositing you here. Or was it some savvy travel goddess that sent you?
After a little rest from your journey, it'll be time to explore the rest of Tobago. So head up the north coast to Englishman’s Bay, an oft-deserted strand of soft sand that the jungle seems bent on engulfing. Here you can spend your time reading a book, catching rays or slipping into the blissful blue bay. Further up the coast you can stop at Castara Beach for a similar peaceful interlude in your travels. But for real outback beaches try Arnos Vale, Bacolet Bay or Pirates Bay, where you can search for buried treasure. Who knows, perhaps a few Pieces of Eight have been overlooked.
Then set sail for Trinidad, the more developed of the two islands, to enjoy Maracas Bay or the out-of-the-way Manzanilla. And don’t forget to check out the rock concerts held during Carnival each year at one of the Trinidad beaches. It’s Woodstock gone Caribbean. Grab a spoon and empty bottle and chill with the locals to that irresistible Calypso sound.
